Shaun Charles is a playwright, director and educator. Shaun's recent directing work includes Dick Done Broke at the Brisbane Powerhouse which opened in June of 2016, and then toured to Brown’s Mart Darwin. In 2014 he directed the Australian premiere of Yokastas Redux by Richard Schechner and Saviana Stanescu. (Metro Arts / Awkward Conversation), and in 2011 he directed Elaine Acworth's Water Wars (La Boite Indie).
Other notable productions include adapting and directing Andrew McGahan's Miles Franklin award winning novel The White Earth for La Boite Theatre Company in 2009. He also adapted McGahan's Last Drinks for La Boite.
As a playwright Shaun's plays include multi-award winning Rio Saki and Other Falling Debris, Three Points of Contact, The River the Dirt and Us and The Understudy.
As an independent producer Shaun has produced and directed numerous premiere productions by local writers including Linda Hassall, Daynan Brazil, Martin Buzacott, Andrew McGahan, Dan Evans and Stephen Carlton. Many of these works have gone on to win awards and receive further productions and publication.
In addition, Shaun has become a recognised force in youth and community arts in Australia. Notable projects include writing the libretto for Australia's first youth opera, Dirty Apple (Backbone Youth Arts / Opera QLD). Writing the text for Paradise the Musical (Backbone Youth Arts / Brisbane Festival, Brisbane Powerhouse) and writing and directing The Birds of Tennant Creek (Australian Theatre for Young People / Barkly Regional Arts) in the Northern Territory.
Shaun has taught various drama subjects at Griffith University for over ten years.
